Again a wonderful read...this book by John Berendt amuses, scandalizes and captivates. A mesmerising account of the writer's stay in Savaanah and his description of the people and places there is fascinating.....
A gripping story of a decadent society, its people and how they anyhow want to maintain their ties with the past and their resistance to change.... the social parties...scandals and the old world charm keeps you thoroughly entertained.....the amazing part was how learned people still believe in voodoo and black magic and inspite of the integration, there is a thin line of demarcation between the blacks and the whites and theres segregation between blacks themselves where the lighter skinned are getting more preferences....guess black isnt so beautiful afterall and then there is the interesting murder trial of antique dealer Jim Williams which again goes on to show the way of life in Savannahians where money and social status means everything....homosexuality and aany other free world thinking is abhorred and gossip and scandals rule....
Its an interesting read which will keep you turning the pages till you get to the end.....
